Annabel Hawker

Qualifications: Graduate certificate in Sports Physiotherapy and Masters of Sports Physiotherapy, Polestar Pilates comprehensive rehabilitation certified, Pink Ribbon Post-Operative certified.

Hi, my name is Annabel and I graduated from Sydney University in 2009 with a First Class Honours degree in Physiotherapy. After working exclusively in paediatrics for a year at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, I transferred into private practice in Sydney for a further 8 years. Here, I specialised in the management of shoulder conditions, with a particular interest in multidirectional instability (MDI), pain associated with hypermobility and adolescent sports injuries.

In 2016 I presented for the Shoulder and Elbow Physiotherapists of Australasia Association on the management of Acromioclavicular joint injuries for their 2016 Seminar programme. You can also hear me speaking about Pilates, MDI management and horse-riding injuries on our very own Complete Health Podcast.

I am passionate about helping this cohort as have my own experience in managing hypermobility. I understand the challenges this group faces and know that I can advocate for this group and the particular challenges of rehabilitation this cohort faces. I also have the professional experience, knowledge and skillset to get people out of pain and back to full function.

It is from my own personal experiences and injuries that I found Pilates. Using this type of activity, I found I could manage my pain and better understand where I was in space. This helped me to further strengthen and allowed me to be active, play tennis and horse ride. Consequently, I completed my Polestar Pilates Comprehensive Rehabilitation certificate so that I could pass this onto others.

Since my initial degree, I have completed a Masters of Sports Physiotherapy from La Trobe University, Melbourne. For this my main research project was on the assessment and management of Achilles Tendinopathy. I now combine my time working with both Complete Physio and Complete Pilates.

Outside of work you can find me spending time cooking and eating with friends and family. I also enjoy visiting museums and galleries, attending the theatre and practicing my piano.
