Lorien Slaughter

Qualifications: Chartered Physiotherapist (CSP, HCPC registered), Level 3 Diploma in sports massage, Polestar Pilates comprehensive rehabilitation certified, Pink Ribbon Post-Operative certified.

Hi, my name is Lorien and I was converted to Pilates very early, in fact, as an eleven year old whilst studying at the Royal Ballet School as it was part of my daily routine. I truly believe this gave me not only the control and strength and I needed, but also improved my kinaesthetic awareness. After seven years of classical training, I graduated and spent the next fifteen years travelling the world dancing with companies such as the Royal Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, English National Ballet and K-Ballet before finishing my career dancing as a Principal with the English Youth Ballet.

Having been inspired by the great physiotherapists that I worked with during my own professional career as a dancer, it was always my plan to utilise that hard-won physical knowledge and retrain as a physiotherapist. Consequently upon retirement, I graduated as a physiotherapist from St George’s University in London and completed my full equipment training with Polestar Pilates.

Wanting to pass on the knowledge that I acquired to dancers, I dived into work in private practice. For the next three years, I managed all manner of musculoskeletal injuries. During this time, I also volunteered as a physiotherapist on the endurance charity event the Virgin Strive Challenge. Here, I put his skills to good use helping the participants complete the gruelling journey from the O2 Arena to the top of the Matterhorn, all by human power. As a self-confessed physio nerd, I have also attended specialist training in Sacro-iliac dysfunction, advanced clinical reasoning for the shoulder, breast cancer and holds a Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy. Wanting to stay connected to the dance world, I also found time to be the resident physiotherapist for the Alexander Whitley Dance Company and provide Physiotherapy informed strength and conditioning for dancers.

In my down time, I love trying new sports, play guitar badly, drink way too much coffee and am threatening to sign up for an Ironman to fight fast approaching middle age!
