Qualifications: Chartered Physiotherapist (CSP, HCPC registered), Level 3 Diploma in sports massage, Polestar Pilates comprehensive rehabilitation, Pink Ribbon Post-Operative certified.
Lorien was converted to Pilates very early, in fact, as an eleven year old whilst studying at the Royal Ballet School it was part of his daily routine. He credits this with giving him not only control and strength, but also improving his kinaesthetic awareness. After seven years of classical training, Lorien graduated and spent the next fifteen years travelling the world dancing with companies such as the Royal Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet, English National Ballet and K-Ballet before finishing his career dancing as a Principal with the English Youth Ballet.
Having been inspired by the great physiotherapists that he worked with during his professional career as a Ballet dancer, it was always his plan to utilise that hard-won physical knowledge and retrain as a physiotherapist. Upon retirement, Lorien successfully completed a Physiotherapy degree at St George’s University in London and has also completed his full equipment training with Polestar Pilates.
Wanting to pass on the knowledge that he had acquired to dancers, he dived into work in private practice. For the next three years, he managed all manner of musculoskeletal injuries. During this time, he also volunteered as a physiotherapist on the endurance charity event the Virgin Strive Challenge. Here, he put his skills to good use helping the participants complete the gruelling journey from the O2 Arena to the top of the Matterhorn all by human power. As a self-confessed physio nerd, he expanded his existing knowledge attending specialist training in Sacro-iliac dysfunction, advanced clinical reasoning for the shoulder and holds a Diploma in Sports Massage Therapy. Wanting to stay connected to the dance world, Lorien also finds time to be the resident physiotherapist for the Alexander Whitley Dance Company. He also provides Physiotherapy informed strength and conditioning for dancers and teaches a weekly open ballet class at Central Nights.
In his down time, Lorien loves trying new sports, plays guitar badly, drinks way too much coffee and is threatening to sign up for an Ironman to fight fast approaching middle age.
