Spine mobility

  • Increasing spinal mobility into rotation
  • Improving shoulder and outer hip mobility

There are no contraindications to the movement however you should be careful if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Reduced shoulder range of movement: stick to the regressions where you are not drawing the full circle
  • Disc problems: reduce the range of movement and make sure to let your pelvis move
  • Osteoporosis: again avoid the end of range rotation.

If you struggle with poor posture or do have lower back problems this can be a great exercise for you. To make sure you are doing it well and distributing the rotation around your spine make sure to:

  • Allow your pelvis to roll slightly. This stops you moving just from the most mobile segment of your spine
  • Use your exhale breath as you are rotating
  • Pause into the movement and take a few breaths to allow your spine to settle
  • If you want to increase the rotation, keep your thighs attached but imagine that you are sliding your top leg down the bottom one. Do this when you are in the rotation as then you know how far you can take it
  • Allow the shoulder blade to move
  • Make sure your body is moving not just your arm
  • Put a pillow under your head if you feel you are straining your neck
